Step 1 of 3: Equipment
Single-story house with gray horizontal lap siding, dark shingled gable roof, a small covered front porch with a dark door, and windows, set behind a patchy green and brown lawn under a clear blue sky.

A mini-split sitting idle through fall, winter, and spring carries its own failure risks. Refrigerant migrates toward the compressor during cold standoffs, and seals that go unloaded for months can dry and leak before the unit ever turns on for summer. Homes in Lewis County, MO run cooling about three months a year, from June through August. That short active window means wear on the compressor, the contactor, and the condenser fan accumulates slowly, but the long rest before it does not protect those parts. A contractor diagnosing a fault at the start of cooling season checks refrigerant charge and electrical contacts first, because sitting still does damage that running never would.

Repair estimates for mini-splits here start with what is already inside the wall, not what is written on the unit's nameplate. Half the homes in Lewis County, Missouri were built in 1969 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Housing from that era was built around whatever was running at the time, and the systems replaced since have each left their own conditions behind: modified electrical runs, patched line-set paths, mounting surfaces that have been worked more than once. When a contractor opens a unit in stock like this, what they find determines the repair scope. Parts availability for the equipment itself is a separate question they answer at the same time.

The Parts of a Mini-split a Contractor Checks During Repair

Isometric cutaway illustration of a gray house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units in separate rooms with furniture, connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser unit on a pad outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room and is usually where a problem makes itself known first. It holds the evaporator coil, the blower fan, and the filter. When any of those fail, the unit may run but deliver poor airflow, blow warm air, or produce sounds or odors that signal something is wrong inside the cabinet.

Outside, the condenser unit houses the compressor and the outdoor coil, and a refrigerant line set runs between the two units through a small opening in the wall. The compressor is the piece contractors go to when the system runs but cannot move heat at all, and the line set itself gets checked for damage or leaks when refrigerant loss is suspected.

The drawing shows the general layout of a mini-split system, and a licensed contractor determines what applies to the specific setup in your home.
